Our parking house in Ørestad is named after Else Alfelt (1910-1974) - a Danish artist who specialized in abstract painting. She was one of two female members of the CoBrA movement. Alfelt's work explored motifs such as spirals, mountains, and spheres. Her best known works are a series of paintings called The Flower of the Universe from1966. In addition to her vibrant abstract paintings, Alfelt also produced several monumental mosaics, famously utilizing the traditional Ravenna technique she discovered during her travels in Italy.

Aside from calling the house after the artist Else Alfelt the client had two demands for this 190-car parking house in suburban Copenhagen. They chose the split-level as the basic layout concept and they wanted a roof accessible to the public.
A split level parking house is the most basic and cheapest way to multilayered parking. The ramp is a integrated part of the structure as you go up and down through the house in a ongoing spiral movement.
Our team at Open Platform regarded the spiral and the idea of doing a giant snail shell, as a way of adapting all the demands of the client to the specific site - a way to connect the roof garden to the street level and at the same time a way of creating a structure that relates to the imagery of Alfelt.
